what to expect this year

Expected on November 9, Football Manager 2022 could be tested in an alpha version by RMC Sport. As for the previous edition, the game is well made but somewhat disappointing, in the absence of remarkable novelty.

Football Manager 2022 seems to be a good game. However, it has one flaw: it was already a good game. RMC Sport was able to test an alpha version of FM22 for a good fifteen hours on PC. This first version could therefore be significantly different from the one that will be delivered on November 9, the official release date of the game, and even that of the beta, generally available two weeks before D-Day. It turns out, however, that this sequel management simulation of a football coach lacks a striking novelty, one that would remove any hesitation in the purchase for holders of FM21.

Three major upgrades are on the career mode menu this year. The most interesting: the new tactical role “off-center central defender”. This allows, in a three-way defense, to reproduce what Jules Koundé can do. That is to say, go beyond its function and venture into attack, with or without the ball. Outside the field, a “data center” brings together a multitude of graphs to better understand the performance of the team. Nothing revolutionary, especially since several of these infographics were already available. Their centralization is however welcome, especially for beginner coaches. In addition, the last day of the transfer window is made more alive, with an interface dedicated to last-minute offers and proposals from agents. Practical, without being essential.

Even if the Covid-19 has (voluntarily) not been integrated, the economic consequences of the health crisis are felt on the prices of transfers. At the start of a game, Paulo Dybala went to Manchester City for € 67 million, Anthony Martial to Chelsea for € 20 million, Boubacar Kamara to Naples for € 22 million including bonus. But the balance will undoubtedly be fine-tuned by the release of the beta, because Abdou Diallo joined Monaco for € 4.5m and Kylian Mbappé was put up for sale for € 42.5m (and agreed to discuss with the AC Milan). Moreover, the game indicates from the outset that the PSG striker “will study his options at the end of his contract”.

In Xbox Game Pass

Other improvements have been made here and there, which will undoubtedly make FM more pleasant, more complete. But nothing that is not obvious, or that fundamentally changes the way of playing. Like last year, the game engine during matches promises to be just as satisfactory. However, without comparing the game to blockbusters of the type FIFA 22 Where Battlefield 2042, maybe it’s time there was a significant upgrade in graphics and 3D animations. Other aspects of the game also deserve some serious dusting, such as press conferences, or even tactical options. Today it remains impossible to ask a player to stay in an X zone if his teammate ventures into a Y zone, for example. For the dynamism of the parties, nothing has been announced on a change in the evolution of the attributes of footballers, while it still seems impossible to see a player reveal himself late.

In fact, the major announcement may be Xbox Game Pass. Football Manager joins, from day one, the impressive catalog of Microsoft’s subscription service. A godsend for occasional players, one month of access to the game is therefore available for 9.99 euros, or even 1 € with the various trial offers that exist.
