In the aftermath of the clashes in Guadeloupe between striking firefighters and gendarmes, the unlimited general strike against the compulsory vaccination of caregivers and the health pass continued on Tuesday, November 16, in particular at the Pointe-à-Pitre University Hospital. A demonstration gathered between 300 and 400 people in the morning in front of the hospital, in front of which also ended a snail operation of the firefighters, noted a journalist from Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Access to the Guadeloupe University Hospital was blocked for vehicles, but pedestrians continued to circulate. “We will see at the end of the month which will be suspended. If we are not paid, no one will be ”, said Gaby Clavier, union representative of UTS UGTG at the CHU, interviewed by AFP. According to the management of the CHU, 566 suspensions were pronounced, while the rate of compliance with the vaccination obligation is 87%.

“The government hears nothing, and we will continue until we are heard”, said Jocelyn Zou, representative of the Force Ouvrière union among firefighters. If a minimum service is provided through assignments and requisitions, the union representative ensures that “It has to stop working so that we can see that there is a problem”.

Service stations unlocked

Clashes pitted striking firefighters and gendarmes on Monday, who charged before being targeted by jets of water hoses handled by firefighters. Two firefighters were injured, according to an FO trade union representative, as well as two gendarmes, AFP learned from a source within the gendarmerie. Other incidents between strikers and the police gave rise to two police custody “Facts of repeated threats to a police officer”, said the prosecution of Pointe-à-Pitre.

Maïté Hubert M’Toumo, general secretary of the General Union of Workers of Guadeloupe (UGTG), a very influential union on the island, described these arrests as « provocation ».

The call for an indefinite general strike was launched by a collective of trade unions and citizens of Guadeloupe to protest against the health pass and the vaccination obligation of caregivers against Covid-19. “The small minority who try to exploit this situation increases the pressure and, in the face of that, you have to be very firm”, the government spokesman Gabriel Attal warned on France Inter on Tuesday. “We will not accept that we prevent people from going for treatment at the hospital, we will not accept that there is pressure being put on people who have made the choice or who are going make the choice to be vaccinated ”, he warned.

In addition, the service stations shut down on Monday in support of the strike were unblocked Tuesday morning. Their employees also defended a few points more specific to their sector of activity, in particular the revision of their collective agreement and the opening of annual negotiations.
