the creator of the Netflix series is working on a controversial season 2

Release on September 17 on the platform Netflix, series Squid Game is a real phenomenon. Its creator is already working on a new season, the subject of which is likely to cause controversy.

A tense subject

Since its release, Squid Game caused a lot of ink to flow. I have to say that Netflix’s South Korean series is extremely embarrassing. Inspired by Battle Royale de Kenji Fukasaku et de la saga Hunger Games de Suzanne Collins, Squid Game imagine le deadly tournament of 456 people wanting earn a reward to help them out of their social condition.

Faced with the scale of the phenomenon, we legitimately wondered if the series would have a season 2. A few days ago, its creator, Hwang Dong-hyeok, had explained that he was not thinking of the next step, because writing and directing Squid Game had been particularly grueling. However, fans of the series can rejoice: South Korean director isn’t giving up on sequel creation. He also knows the subject!

Indeed, in the columns of the Times, Hwang Dong-hyeok explained that he wanted to deal with a deeply controversial subject: police-related issues, including corruption. It develops :

JI think the problem with the Police is not just a problem in Korea. When I look at the news in the world, I realize that the police force can be behind on some things. […] Maybe I’ll talk about it in season 2.

The least we can say is that the Korean director risks tackling a very delicate subject. Whether in Korea, the United States or France, relations between the police and the population are sometimes very strained. Recent police films, such as the documentary A country that stands wise by David Dufresne and the film BAC North, have also revived the debates in France.

Anyway, this season 2 project themed around Korean police dysfunction reminds us how deeply political Korean cinema and television are. Following the collapse of the dictatorship in 1992, many filmmakers emerged, offering a very social, often Marxist discourse, like the directors Park Chan-wook (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, miss) et Bong Joon-ho (Memories of Murder, Parasite). In the meantime, did you know that Squid Game is used in Manila for the respect of the highway code, making reign there the terror?
