Sergio Agüero. Five dates which marked the career of the “Kun”. Sport

The Argentinian Sergio Agüero puts an end to his career, this Wednesday, December 15, 2021. An announcement, unfortunate, awaited for several days. Plagued with heart problems, the “Kun” has no other choice. At 33, the Argentinean must therefore say goodbye to the football fields, which he stepped on as a professional for the first time at the age of 15, in Argentina. It was with the Independiente, before his arrival in Europe. Eighteen years of professional experience, looking back on five key dates in Agüero’s career.

1. May 30, 2006: signing at Atlético de Madrid

After three years spent with the pros of the Independiente, for a total of 23 goals in 56 games, Sergio Agüero took the plunge: he joined Europe and Atlético de Madrid on May 30, 2006. At the time, his transfer is a record (20 million euros) since he becomes the most expensive Argentinian player in history. In Madrid, among Mattresses, the Argentinian striker quickly becomes the darling of the club and an indebted one of the starting eleven. By marking the spirits against clubs like Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, ​​Sevilla or Valencia, the Argentinian manages, from his second season in Spain, to qualify Atlético de Madrid for the first time in ten years in the League of champions.

2. May 12, 2010: the first major trophy

With Atlético, the “Kun” will experience his greatest emotion in Germany, in Hamburg. It was May 12, 2010, in the final of the Europa League, against the English Fulham. Double decisive passer for Diego Forlan, his attacking friend with the Colchoneros, Agüero fully participates in the final victory of the Spaniards in the competition (2-1, after extra time). For him, after the gold medal of the 2008 Olympic Games with Argentina, it is his first major trophy in his young career, at 22 years old.

July 3, 2011: gondola head of the Manchester City project

A year after the happiness of victory in the Europa League, Sergio Agüero leaves Atlético on bad terms. After a successful 2010-2011 season on a personal level (20 goals scored in the league, in particular), he forced his departure at the end of the season. It is also on his personal website that he made public his decision to leave the Colchoneros, in May 2011. And it was against a check for 45 million euros, an extraordinary transfer at the time, that the Argentine striker leaves Spain for England and the Manchester City project. That summer, he was the head of the Emirati owners, who put together a huge project.

4. May 13, 2012: the goal of a champion

Manchester City – QPR: May 13, 2012. That day, at the Etihad Stadium, the tension was at its height. The Citizens, in the fight for the title of champion of England against Manchester United, are held in check by the Queen’s Park Ranger of Djibril Cissé. In the 91st minute, Manchester City even fell 2-1. Edin Dzeko tied the two teams in the 92nd minute. At that point, the rivals Manchester United have finished, and won, their match and thus find themselves at the top of the championship. But in the 94th minute, Sergio Agüero entered the scene and managed to score. 3-2, explosion of the stadium and first league title for Manchester City since 1968. An anthology goal which forged its legend at City.

5 July 11, 2021: the coronation with the selection

Like Lionel Messi, Sergio Agüero has long chased a title with the jersey of the Argentine selection. The day of glory arrived on July 11, 2021, with the victory in the final against Brazil (1-0). Not necessarily the holder, the “Kun” is nevertheless present and participates in the competition, where he makes an assist. This victory with his selection sublimates an already substantial record: English champion (2012, 2014, 2018, 2019 and 2021), winner of the Europa League (2010), winner of the English Cup (2019), medalist Olympic Games Gold (2008) and World Cup Finalist (2014).
