Olivier Giroud talks about the two biggest regrets of his football career

Monday, Olivier Giroud, striker at AC Milan from July until June 2023, was the guest of the British podcast Football Ramble and their show Book Club, in which they receive a guest who has recently published a book. That of the French striker, entitled Always believe, was published in September 2020, but its more recent release was above all an opportunity to return in detail to the footballer’s past and to address the subject of the post-career. Asked by Jim Campbell and Kate Mason, Olivier Giroud spoke of his post-retirement plans, he who has just celebrated his 35th birthday and who is therefore approaching the end of the clap. Rest assured, he shouldn’t be gone anytime soon. “It’s too early to talk about it but I think I’ll stay in football. I have been in this world for many years and I think I have gained some credit and accumulated experience that can help me, ”he said.

And yet, the World Champion does not seem to think of the classic conversion into a coach, to which many former players are turning. “I am thinking of a role of sports director, youth manager or sports policy of a club. The role of coach is not for me. There is too much stress in this position, I have great respect for those who do. When I read Arsène Wenger’s book, I noticed that his greatest regret was having left his family aside, ”said the native of Chambéry, even if he said he was seduced by the ‘idea of “training attackers”. “It would be a wonderful role,” he added.

On a more introspective note, the player also returned to an unfortunate subject: his career regrets. He has two major ones. “My biggest regrets so far are the defeat in the Euro 2016 final and not having won the Premier League with Arsenal or Chelsea,” he confessed. But he also made it clear that he firmly intends to rectify the situation with his new Milan club: “Now we have to think about the next challenges and I have high hopes of winning another title with my current club”. With 25 points, AC Milan is currently in second position in Serie A and is behind Naples very closely. The Milanese will therefore do everything to win the Scudetto, this prestigious trophy and badge of the Italian championship held since May by the other team of the city, Inter Milan, which occupies the current third position of the championship.
