Black Friday gaming laptop: which is better with an RTX 3060?

The launch of the new graphics cards from Nvidia RTX Ampere sounded the death knell for the current shortages in this product category. However, gaming laptops are resisting this shortage and are today the best way to enjoy the latest games available on PC without breaking the bank. For Black Friday, there are two references with an integrated Nvidia RTX 3060 graphics card at less than 1000 euros: the Asus TUF F15 at Carrefour and the Lenovo Legion 5 at Cdiscount, but which is the most interesting? Let’s try to clarify this.

Why choose the Lenovo Legion 5 (15ACH6H)?

  • Son port HDMI 2.1
  • Its two USB C ports (USB 3.2 Gen2)
  • Its second NVMe SSD slot

Initially displayed at 1199 euros, the Lenovo Legion 5 (15ACH6H) is now available for less than 950 euros on Cdiscount for Black Friday. It is also available in a pack with 3 months of Xbox Game Pass PC subscription at the same price, but with more limited stocks. Finally for the more do-it-yourselfers, you can upgrade to 16 GB of RAM by installing a second 3200 MHz SODIMM like this one and adding a second NVMe SSD like this one.

Why choose the Asus TUF F15 (566HM-HN051T)?

  • Ses 16 Go RAM
  • Its 1080p 144 Hz screen
  • Son port USB-C Thunderbolt 4

Also available at its launch at 1199 euros in a 15-inch version, the Asus TUF F15 (566HM-HN051T) is displayed today at 999 euros on Carrefour for Black Friday. Carrefour also offers vouchers for members of the brand’s free loyalty program.

Very similar PCs on paper

The Asus TUF F15 and the Lenovo Legion 5 are two very similar machines. They are both equipped with a 15-inch Full HD screen and an Nvidia RTX 3060 GPU compatible with Directx 12 Ultimate, Ray Tracing and DLSS. There are nevertheless some differences, the Lenovo embeds one of the latest CPUs from AMD: Ryzen 5 5600H. On the Asus, we find one of the latest solutions from Intel: the i5 11400H. Unfortunately, it is difficult to compare them on this point, because the performances provided by the two hexacore processors are very extremely similar to the point of being very tight on the majority of benchmarks, with an overall advantage for the Intel in single-core and for the ‘AMD in multi-core. They both benefit from Wi-Fi 6 and Ethernet 1 Gb / s compatibility and 3 USB A 3.1 (Gen1) ports. Finally, they are of course both compatible with Windows 11 which can replace Windows 10 from the first use by following our tutorial to switch to Windows 11.

To consult the complete technical data sheets of the two products, it is better to go to the manufacturers’ site. You will therefore find technical information on the Lenovo Legion 5 at this address and on the Asus TUF F15 at this address.

Which one to choose ?

However, by digging a little, we find some differences that can make the difference depending on the needs. The most major difference is the RAM, the Asus TUF F-15 is natively equipped with 16 GB of RAM unlike 8 GB for the Lenovo, but it is nevertheless very easy to upgrade to 16 GB by installing a second 3200 MHz SODIMM. like this one. The Asus TUF F15 is equipped with a Thunderbolt 4 USB C port thanks to its Intel CPU, which the Lenovo Legion 5 with its AMD CPU does not allow, but it compensates for this lack with two USB C 3.2 (Gen2) ports. On the other hand, the Lenovo Legion 5 is equipped with an HDMI 2.1 port compared to only 2.0b on the Asus TUF F15, a significant addition even if the 4K at 120 frames per second will be difficult to achieve with an RTX 3060 in most games. Two final differences: we will find a 144 Hz screen on the Asus against 120 Hz on the Lenovo and a second NVMe SSD slot is available on the Lenovo.

The difference between these two PCs is therefore in the details. The Lenovo Legion 5 will therefore be aimed more at those who would be comfortable upgrading their PC in the future with more RAM and a second SSD, its strength being its versatility. On the contrary, the Asus will be aimed more at those who wish to use their PC more simply by taking advantage of a complete solution from the first start.
