Véran announces the opening this Wednesday and “without delay” of the vaccination to all 5-11 year olds

With the support of the scientific authorities, the Minister of Health confirmed the extension “without delay” of the anti-Covid-19 vaccination campaign to all children aged 5 to 11 years. The appointment will be operational from this Wednesday morning.

“Today we are opening vaccination for children, it’s official, I can tell you”. The suspense was minimal but Olivier Véran put an end to it definitively at the microphone of our journalist Jean-Jacques Bourdin. As of Wednesday, all children aged 5 to 11 are therefore eligible for a dose of Pfizer anti-Covid-19 vaccine.

“We must initiate the vaccination of children and in the coming hours, in the morning, on the appointment sites, you will have the category ‘children from 5 to 11 years’ which will appear”, he said. he continued.

While this extension of the campaign had been mentioned in broad daylight for weeks, the Minister of Health explained why it was not until December 22 for its entry into force.

“I wanted the transparent publication of US vaccination data,” he said.

Americans have been vaccinating this age group since November 3. “They made seven million injections in 5-11 year olds. Of these 7 million, 14 adverse effects due to reversible myocardia, that is to say that there are more risks and even many more statistically, to have serious forms of Covid when you are between 5 and 11 years old, even without comorbidity, than to have a serious adverse effect linked to the vaccine, “continued Olivier Véran.

All lights on green

But the green lights hoped for by Avenue de Ségur were primarily based on our scientific authorities.

“I had the favorable opinions of the health and scientific authorities”, declared Olivier Véran.

This Wednesday morning, also relying on the elements imported from the United States, the Orientation Council of the Vaccine Strategy, the body led by the “Mr. vaccine” of the government Alain Fischer, has indeed formalized its opinion.

“These safety data are likely to reassure on the adverse effects that can occur following an anti-Covid-19 vaccination in a child aged 5 to 11 years. Therefore, the COSV is in favor of the launch of the pediatric vaccination campaign without delay, in order to strengthen the immunity of this age group against Covid-19 “, can we read in this press release

On Monday, it was the High Authority for Health which issued its imprimatur. The European regulator had also taken the lead, authorizing the vaccination of 5-11 year olds on the continent from November 25.

350 centers are ready, pharmacies and town doctors by the end of December

Olivier Véran also specified the terms of this new stage of the injection campaign aimed at countering the spread of the virus. Stressing of course that the child must be accompanied by at least one of his parents, he asked: “I open the appointments, the vaccination can begin without delay. As of today, there are centers who are ready. ” He put the number of the latter at “350 in the country”.

“There will also be town doctors and pharmacies which will be able to start at the end of December,” he added.

Focusing on the case of young audiences, Olivier Véran, on the other hand, felt that obtaining a booster dose by adolescents was not yet on the agenda. “Not at the moment,” he simply swept away when the question was thrown at him.
