Faced with the increase in Covid-19 cases, the executive may have to take new measures concerning the evening of December 31.

The transition to the New Year had been unprecedented on December 31, 2020. The festivities had gone well, but under curfew. As for December 31, 2021, the French may have to deal with new measures, the fault of an increase in Covid-19 cases in the country. The scientific council calls for more firmness, in particular “in the form of restrictions on collective activities or curfews”.

Some French people, interviewed Tuesday, December 21, plan to celebrate the New Year in a small committee, others to be tested before celebrating. In an attempt to keep the pandemic situation under control, the authorities have asked each municipality to give up the usual concerts and fireworks, and to ban alcohol consumption on public roads. The executive could go beyond, “if we see that there is a very strong resumption of the epidemic linked to the Omicron variant and a risk”, said government spokesman Gabriel Attal. A health defense council is expected to take place after Christmas.
