The Kings push the Lakers after three overtime at Staples Center! | NBA

The Lakers are subscribed to overtime this season … Two days after pushing back the Pacers after five extra minutes, the Californians have this time embarked on a never-ending game, ended after three overtime. But after four wins so far in such circumstances, the Lakers have bit the dust.

For the first of their four encounters this season, the two teams hardly left each other in scoring. After a first period where the defenses clearly took precedence over the rest, the equality was perfect (43-43). The premises gave an offensive boost in the third quarter won 35-30.

With ten points behind in the first minutes of the fourth period, the visitors found the resources to pick up the score and snatch the extension (100-100). Beyond the big exit of De’Aaron Fox, well supported by Buddy Hield and Tyrese Haliburton, Alvin Gentry relied, rightly, on the unlikely pair Marvin Bagley – Alex Len in the racket to finish the match.

After a first overtime, ended on a missed buzzer shot from LeBron James (112-112), the Kings lacked lucidity at the very end of the second overtime period (124-124). Visitors simply “forgot” to trigger in an attempt to win. They were much more realistic in the very last period of the meeting, where the Fox – Hield pair made the difference.

WHAT YOU MUST REMEMBER

The Kings’ permanent sponsor. We thought the Lakers would bury the Kings when they took a 12-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter. The visitors did not lose their calm to pick up and even take the lead during the “money time” before extra time. Generally speaking, we don’t count the number of times the Lakers, after a scored shot, have conceded a field goal in the following seconds by De’Aaron Fox and his troops.

The awkwardness of the superstars. While Russell Westbrook made a clean copy, Anthony Davis and LeBron James suffered a lot more. In addition to a handful of failed free throws (surprisingly only this “Big Three” was on the line …), the pair James – Davis accumulated a disastrous 2/18 behind the arc …

Playing times that blaze. Logic with so many extensions. While the two coaches aimed for a good distribution of playing time, with rotations to nine players, LeBron James, Russell Westbrook and De’Aaron Fox all passed the 50 minutes played mark. Five other players have reached 40 minutes. This extended match could leave physical traces for the two teams who play again on Sunday.

TOPS/FLOPS

De’Aaron Fox. Big game for the leader of the Kings who exceeds the 30 point mark for the second time this season. Not really comfortable at 3-points, he especially hurt the Lakers at mid-distance, often after forcing a defensive “switch” to shoot in front of a big guy.

Russell Westbrook. New triple-double for the leader of the Lakers who did not force his game and limited the waste as much as possible, including free throws. He has been seen a lot celebrating and interacting with fans at Staples Center, a sign that the former MVP is much better at his basketball.

Malik Monk. While Talen Horton-Tucker was less enterprising, the former Hornets player was the main spark from the Lakers bench. Varying near-circle finishes and long-distance shooting, he scored one of his cleanest performances of the season. He was, however, invisible in the various additional periods.

The interior of the Kings. The Lakers struggled to protect their defensive rebound. Blame it on the good exits of the triplet Alex Len – Marvin Bagley – Tristan Thompson. Comfortable under the circle, and even behind the arc, the three men each made their contribution at different key points in the match.

✅ ⛔ Buddy Held. What nerve ! While he hardly came in for three quarters, the back woke up and regained his address late in the game. He signed a fire end of first overtime with an award-winning basket very far to equalize the first time, then a more improbable “floater” to send everyone into second overtime. He did not crack the free throws at the very end.

✅ ⛔ LeBron James. Very mixed game for the King who certainly ends with an impressive final line of statistics. But we can also remember his seven ball losses and especially his crazy clumsiness behind the 3-point line, from which he insisted too much (2/13). He notably missed his shot at the buzzer at the end of regulation time, then at the end of the first extra time …

A DUO IN HISTORY

With 30 points / 11 assists and 29 points / 11 assists respectively, LeBron James and Russell Westbrook become the first Lakers duo to finish the same game with 25 points and 10 assists since… November 1978 and the Norm Nixon – Kareem Abdul-Jabbar tandem.
