TRIBUTES – His disappearance is a shock. Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallée died at the age of 58, after a career that saw him travel through Quebec, Hollywood and France.
According to American media, Jean-Marc Vallée died suddenly at his home near Quebec City. The HBO channel, on which were broadcast in the United States Big Little Lies and the mini-series Sharp Objects, along with Amy Adams, said she was “shocked by the news of her sudden death”.
It is with a drama set in the early days of AIDS, Dallas Buyers Club, that Jean-Marc Vallée had achieved consecration, in 2013. The film, which won an Oscar for actors Matthew McConaughey, in the lead role, and Jared Leto, traces the true story of an American, macho and violent, who finds himself ill with AIDS.
“He didn’t romanticize life so much as he saw it romantic, from the struggle and the pain to the wink and the whisper, love stories were all in his eyes”, a film star Matthew McCognaughey reacted on Instagram.
“A cinematographic force and a true artist who changed my life with a beautiful film entitled ‘Dallas Buyers Club’, for his part wrote on the same social network Jared Leto. Much love to all who knew him. Life is precious”.
Jean-Marc Vallée will also leave his mark with his greatest public success, the series Big Little Lies (“Small secrets, big lies” in Quebec), produced by HBO.
He made the first season, seven episodes, carried by a quintet of stars. The first of them, Reese Witherspoon, who had also appeared in her film Wild, also paid tribute to the director.
“I will always remember you at sunset,” she said on Instagram. Chase the light. On a mountain in Oregon. On a Monterey beach. Make sure we all caught some magic in this life ”.
Nicole Kidman also posted a message, along with several photos, to honor the memory of a “vital”, “energetic” and “present” man.
“Jean-Marc was not only responsible for some of the most rewarding professional experiences of my career, but his friendship, kindness and love have been an inspiring force that I will carry with me,” she said.
“The world has lost one of our great and purest artists and dreamers,” wrote Laura Dern. Shailene Woodley also said she was “shocked”.
Several actors who had played in his film Demolition also expressed their sadness after the death of Jean-Marc Vallée.
“We are all heartbroken,” actress Naomi Watts wrote. I am deeply grateful to have known you. Not just for the beautiful art you created for everyone, but also for the way you believed in others to help them discover it in themselves ”.
“We will miss you dearly,” said Jake Gyllenhaal.
There have also been political reactions in Canada. “Just like his talent, Jean-Marc Vallée’s passion for film and directing was unmatched,” for his part estimated Monday, December 27, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Twitter. “His art will have marked Quebec, Canada and the world,” he added.
“What tragic news. Jean-Marc Vallée moved me to C.R.A.Z.Y. at Big Little Lies. He was extremely kind ”, regretted the Prime Minister of Quebec François Legault, evoking an“ exceptional artist ”.
