Guadeloupe woke up this Thursday morning with many blockages on the roads linked to demonstrations against the vaccine obligation, according to several sources, while the night was punctuated by several incidents such as burning vehicles.
Shortly before 6 am, the road in front of the Pointe-à-Pitre University Hospital was blocked in both directions by tires erected as a barrier held by “about thirty demonstrators, most of them hooded”, noted an AFP videographer.
The barrier was dismantled several times by the police and reassembled by the demonstrators before being set on fire on one of the two axes. The fire was then extinguished, the road was cleared and traffic resumed. On the other roads, including in the small roads of the Grands Fonds, roadblocks sometimes empty of demonstrators block the passage.
Some are dismantled by motorists themselves, according to images circulating on social networks. Not far from the headquarters of the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS), in Les Abymes, which concentrates some of the discontent due to the compulsory vaccination of firefighters, a vehicle was set on fire during the night next to tire fires and pallets.
Some tried in the morning to move by moving the pallets but the few people present at the dam then put them back, the AFP journalist noted. Barricades were also erected at other points known on the island to be regularly blocked during demonstrations, in particular the Boucan bridge in Sainte-Rose.
On the Pointe-Noire side, the Mahault crossroads is blocked. Branches and other household waste were placed on the ground.
In a press release, the Union des Entreprises-Medef “strongly condemns the obstacles to freedom of movement”.
“Where are we going? What is the legitimacy of those who deny access to health care? After months of restrictive measures for our population and the country’s economy, it is unacceptable to allow this spiral of self-destruction to flourish.
The employers’ organization believes that companies, where the general strike called by the unions is not very followed, are still paralyzed by blockades.
