Pique’s hand not whistled, forgotten red, lively controversy over VAR and arbitration

The first minutes of the match of the 15th day of La Liga between Villarreal and Barça were marked by two arbitration controversies: for an unwhistled red card after the sole of Parejo on Busquets and after a hand from Pique in the box.

Something to talk about … on both sides. Barça will travel to Villarreal on Saturday for the 15th day of La Liga. This is Xavi’s second game on the Barcelona bench in the league, following a derby victory against Espanyol 1-0 (and a Champions League draw against Benfica 0-0). But the start of the meeting was not really something to feast on.

Was there a red card for Parejo?

From the 3rd minute of play, serious fault on Sergio Busquets. The Blaugrana captain suffered a very nasty sole from Dani Parejo in the ankle bone. The midfielder took a long time to get up, limping. He finally resumed his place … and his opponent was not penalized, neither a yellow card, nor a red one.

Another controversial action in the 6th minute of the match. While he is at the entrance to its surface, Eric Garcia chooses the back pass and totally misses it. Arnaut Danjuma takes the opportunity to recover the ball. Gerard Piqué, aware of the danger, then returns to the area with a slip to deflect the ball … with his hand. No sanction there either, despite complaints from Unai Emery players.

On the two actions, there was no intervention of the VAR. The Spanish press is loose, obviously, on arbitration. On the Cadena SER, we talk about “lamentable” arbitrage. Fernando Roig Negueroles, general manager of Villarreal, expressed his anger and his incomprehension on Movistar: “it is incomprehensible that it is not whistled, the hand is clear. The strike is on target and he deflects it with the hand , there should at least be a penalty. ” More arguments for those reluctant to video assistance in arbitration … or for its defenders.
