These two days of testing in Jerez were a real baptism of fire for Moto3 rider Darryn Binder who now finds himself on the front row in MotoGP. Considering his reputation exacerbated as an unsuccessful maneuver on the last lap of a race in Portimao, he was watched closely, even though his RNF team was bubble around him to spare him. Brad’s brother, a KTM official, did quite well by not making waves. He already regrets a fall, however, but it’s the job that fits …
Darryn Binder, at 23, arrives in MotoGP on a Yamaha directly from a Honda… from Moto3. The South African thus discovers another world but he can count on the benevolence and the experience of his team WithU Yamaha RNF MotoGP Racing, an ex-Petronas structure in which he will have the veteran Andrea Dovizioso as a teammate.
The one who is also one of the five rookies of the next 2022 campaign achieved a 1’39.341 as the best performance after two days spent at Jerez. A stopwatch that puts him anonymously 27th in the combined standings, three seconds behind Pecco Bagnaia. A gap that Darryn will have to reduce during the tests of Sepang and Indonesia scheduled for next February in order to appear decently for the opening round of Losail.
On his experience, he says: “ Friday we resumed practice where I had left them the day before. As soon as I arrived on the track I started to improve, but unfortunately I fell, and that slowed down the test a bit. In the afternoon we continued to work, but more calmly, also trying to do some tire tests. If I hadn’t fallen I think I would have made more progress, but at least it’s one more experience to avoid making a similar mistake in the future ».
Because this fall is to the credit of an experience in the process of being acquired. He explains in fact: “ before starting a lot of riders told me to be careful to keep the tires warm before starting to attack. I had to slow down in some corners to let the other riders pass me, and maybe with the addition of the wind that blew all day, it made my tires lose temperature. The lesson is that you can’t drive too hard from the start with these tires. ».
Darryn Binder : “Brad will continue to help and support me like he always has“
Due to its height of 1m75, Darryn Binder feel more comfortable on the Yamaha than on his previous Honda de Moto3: ” I would like to be able to tell you that I move the MotoGP with more comfort… But the truth is that at this speed it is not easy, even if I feel more comfortable than the handlebars of the Moto3 ”he comments. Otherwise, he feels very supported by his new team: “I am not stressed, the team helps me a lot, there is an atmosphere relaxed. The real test will be in Malaysia. At the moment i’m in no hurry ».
And then he can also count on his older brother Brad: “ my brother and I have a great relationship, but we’re not talking about technical issues. We work for different teams and each one goes their own way. But that doesn’t stop us from talking about other issues. For example, the way it is better to tackle the corners in MotoGP. He gave me several tips, especially regarding the temperature of the tires. We live together so I don’t think it will change our dynamic, Brad will continue to help and support me like he always has. ».
