lung cancer, six months of chemotherapy, and a return to the stage?

The singer announced on January 25 that he had lung cancer and had to follow “a six-month protocol of chemotherapy and X-rays”. But Florent Pagny is optimistic and assures that he will quickly get back on stage.

[Mis à jour le 25 janvier 2022 à 08h51] Florent Pagny must move away from the scene to fight lung cancer. The singer announced it himself, in a video posted on his social networks, Tuesday, January 25. And Florent Pagny presented things as an “impediment”, without dramatizing his state of health, seeing himself forced to put his professional projects and his tour planned for this year on hold. “I will not be able to finish my 60th anniversary tour. I have to cancel all of my concerts due to a health problem,” he said, facing his phone, in a message now relayed in most medias.

The French singer gave some information on the medical recommendations and the prognosis given to him. “I have just been diagnosed with a tumor in the lung, a cancerous tumor that is not very sympathetic and cannot be operated on. So I have to go into a six-month protocol of chemotherapy and X-rays.” Florent Pagny is therefore suffering from lung cancer, but announced it without going into detail, keeping a fairly light tone given the severity of the disease.

Florent Pagny did not say more about his state of health at this stage. But wishing to focus on “the most important”, he did not announce a specific postponement of the canceled concerts. The star simply indicated that all tickets purchased for the quarantine of canceled dates would be refunded. Wanting to be reassuring, the singer expressed the wish that he and his audience meet next year: “Take care of yourself and when all this is settled, we will meet again and I will come to finish what I started. maybe there will be the 61-year-old tour.”

However, we will be able to see Florent Pagny on the screen again this year. Indeed, as of next February 12, the issue The Voice, of which he is one of the members of the jury, will be broadcast: “You will still see me on the red armchair of The Voice in great shape since we recorded everything before. And besides, in parentheses, this season is very interesting”, he assured in his video. On the other hand, we do not yet know how the live broadcasts which must be held at the end of the season will take place, in spring.

Recognized singer, confirmed actor… Florent Pagny has been part of the French musical landscape for more than thirty years. “Knowing how to love”, “And one day a woman”, “My freedom to think”, or even “Where I will take you”, several of his titles have become classics. In total, he has sold more than 15 million records. Florent Pagny was born on November 6, 1961 in Chalon-sur-Saône, in Saône et Loire. This is where he grew up, with his mother, Odile, secretary, Jean, his father, who sells vignettes and his three brothers and sisters. Very early on, Florent Pagny developed a passion for music and decided, at only 16, to leave his family to settle in Paris.

In the capital, he then met the famous showbiz headhunter, Dominique Besnehard. The latter offers him the chance to take his first steps in the cinema. He won roles and played in “La Balance” by Bob Swaim, “Fort Saganne” by Alain Corneau or in “Inspecteur Labavure” by Claude Zidi. In 1987, Florent decided to turn to song. He writes the song “N’importe quoi”, manifesto against drugs. The 45 rpm, produced by Gérard Louvin, met with enormous success (1 million copies sold) and stayed at the top of the top 50 for 26 weeks. In 1988, he repeated the feat with his new 45 rpm, “Let us breathe”. The following year, Florent Pagny obtained a music victory in the category “Male revelation of the year”. In 1990, he released his first album, “Merci”. The singer is rewarded with a gold record with more than 100,000 copies sold.

However, the sudden notoriety, the money, his relationship with the young singer Vanessa Paradis and his title “Rolling Press,” earned Florent Pagny growing unpopularity with the media. It will be boycotted for 4 years. In 1992, he released his second album, very autobiographical, “Realist”. The success is mixed and Florent Pagny is faced with personal and financial problems. The artist is at the bottom of the wave.

“Staying True” is Florent Pagny’s third opus and places the year 1994 under the sign of rediscovered peace. Jean-Jacques Goldman writes to him “Are you following me?” and “If you want to try me”, two huge hits. A year later, “Bienvenue chez moi” was released, a compilation containing three new tracks, including “Bienvenue chez moi” (1.5 million copies). In 1997, exiled in Patagonia in the south of Argentina, the singer released a new album, “Knowing how to love”. The signatures are prestigious. We find, Erick Benzi, Zazie, Art Mengo, Pascal Obispo, Jacques Veneruzo, Jean-Jacques Goldman… Despite the artist’s tax adventures, the disc is a commercial success with 1.4 million copies sold. Florent Pagny is logically rewarded with the victory of the music of the “Best male artist”. Records, tours and changes of looks follow one another: “Re-creation” (1999), “Châtelet les Halles” (2000), “2” (2001), “Ailleurs Land” (2003), “Baryton (2004) and “Abracadabra” (2006).

Caught up by the tax authorities on January 27, 2005, he was sentenced for “tax evasion”. November 2007, Florent Pagny finally feels ready to play the man he considers a master, Jacques Brel. He chooses eleven songs from the Belgian singer’s repertoire and delivers an opus that has the value of a self-portrait, “Pagny sings Brel.” At the production, we find the guitarist Daran and Yvan Cassar, talented pianist and arranger. The singer interprets Brel with sobriety accompanied by a philharmonic orchestra. To date, he has given a unique performance at L’Olympia, on December 1, 2007, in front of an enthusiastic audience.

In 2010, Florent Pagny released the album “Everything and its opposite” in which he found Pascal Obispo with whom he sang in duet. In 2011, he went on an acoustic tour to celebrate his 50th birthday. Since 2012, he has been a coach for the show “The Voice, the most beautiful voice”. In 2013, the single “Les Murs Carriers” was released, the first extract from the album “Vieillir avec toi”, entirely composed by Calogero. The album was certified diamond disc in July 2014.
