Haute-Garonne switches to orange vigilance against flooding: part of the department very concerned

Thursday, December 9, 2021, since the start of the day, the Haute-Garonne had been placed on orange vigilance for avalanches, given the heavy snowfall recorded for a few days.

Sometimes strong intensities

Since the end of the afternoon, the department has also switched to orange vigilance to flooding.

“The precipitation continues durably around the Pyrenees with an episode lasting until Saturday morning when it begins to subside. The intensities are moderate, sometimes quite strong the next night and tomorrow morning (hourly accumulations exceeding 10 mm) ”, indicates the prefecture of Haute-Garonne, which continues:

Between now and midday on Friday, we expect accumulations in 24 hours of 30 to 60 mm (or liter of water / m2) in the plains and a gradient with altitude, from 70 to 100 mm from the piedmont to the high mountain and maximums of 130 mm.

Redoux and melting snow

The rainy disturbance will also be accompanied by a clear warmth in the mountains where the rain / snow limit will rise to 2200 / 2300m the next night. It will drop to around 1500m at the end of the night or early morning tomorrow, then around 1200m afterwards.

The significant rise in temperatures which will promote intense snowmelt below 2000 m.

The contribution of snowmelt will become significant with an input of 50 mm in water equivalent around 700 m, 40 mm around 1,000 m and 30 mm around 1,800 m.

Localized overflows

Result, localized overflows of watercourses are possible from late night-early morning.

The Pyrenean part of Haute-Garonne, south of Saint-Gaudens, especially the Saint-Béat valley, could be particularly impacted.

In the night

The first hydrological reactions are expected in the second part of the night.

“The maximum levels will be reached by mid-morning at Saint-Béat (Garonne) and nearby d’Arreau in the Hautes-Pyrénées, a department also placed in orange vigilance, ”announces the prefecture.
