Gaspard Ulliel’s funeral: the world of cinema pays a last tribute to the actor killed in a skiing accident

French cinema is in mourning. Many actors, actresses, his family and his friends gathered to attend the funeral of actor Gaspard Ulliel, this Thursday morning at the Saint-Eustache church in Paris. A thousand people were gathered in the church and about a thousand in the square.

At the entrance to the building was a black and white portrait, cigarette in mouth, of the man who was a magnetic Saint Laurent on the big screen. Many wreaths of flowers, often white, had been laid, including those of the Césars, the actor Vincent Cassel and the bilingual school Jeannine Manuel in Paris with the inscription “To our dear Gaspouille”.

Among the personalities present, we could recognize Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Hupper, Nathalie Baye, Léa Seydoux, Pierre Niney, Louis Garrel, Alex Lutz, Jérémie Rénier or Alice Belaïdi.

Gaspard Ulliel had been the victim of an accident at La Rosière in Savoie. He had collided with a Lithuanian skier in his forties at the crossroads of two blue runs. The actor was not wearing a helmet while the other skier was equipped.

Quickly taken care of by the emergency services, as told by the doctor who intervened on the estate, Gaspard Ulliel had been transported to the Grenoble University Hospital. He died of his injuries the following day. No speeding was found, according to the first elements of the investigation.

A twenty-year career in cinema

Gaspard Ulliel was known to the general public for films such as “A Long Engagement Sunday” (2004) by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and “Juste la fin du monde” (2016) by Xavier Dolan, which won him the César for Best Actor in 2017. He played a writer reuniting with his family after twelve years of absence, to whom he came to announce his impending death. He had previously won the César for Best Male Hope in 2005 thanks to “A long engagement Sunday”, in which he plays Manech, the fiancé of Mathilde (Audrey Tautou), who disappeared in 1917 in the trenches. He had also shot in the United States, in “Hannibal Lecter: the origins of evil”, which tells the young years of the cannibal “serial killer” and was his first role in English. He will be appearing in the Marvel series “Moon Knight”, broadcast from March 30 on Disney+.
