France presents a new design for the 1 and 2 euro coins

The 2 euro coin will be put into circulation on January 1, 2022, the government announced on Thursday at a press conference dedicated to the next French presidency of the EU.

Clément Beaune announced this Thursday afternoon that a new 2 euro coin would soon be minted by France and put into circulation, on the occasion of the French presidency of the Council of the EU which will start on January 1 for six month. A new 1 euro coin, which will feature the same design, will also be issued.

“This is the first time since the entry into office in the portfolios of the French and Europeans of euro coins that, in France, we have changed the design of this coin”, declared the minister during a press conference. presenting the priorities of the French Presidency of the EU. It also consists “of marking the anniversary of the single currency: 2022 will also be the 20 years of the Euro”, he added.

These new coins, which will be minted in Pessac (Gironde), were designed by the general engraver of the Monnaie de Paris, Joaquin Jimenez, who had already imagined the current 1 and 2 euro coins. The new design is inspired by the previous design: there is a stylized tree representing an oak tree, which evokes “strength and justice” and an olive tree, which “symbolizes peace”, on which is affixed the French motto.

“This tree shines towards the stars of the European flag as an allegory of values ​​shared with other countries. The different facets of the leaves represent diversity, which constitutes national unity, while being crossed by the sap of values ​​coming from historical roots. and constitutional […] and emerging at the top. The whole is placed in a multitude of hexagons […] evoking the multiplicity of France and its rise “, explains the Monnaie de Paris in a press release.

From January 1, 2022

According to the Monnaie de Paris, 30 million new 2 euro coins will be put into circulation as of January 1, 2022. The new 1 euro coins will not be put into circulation for the moment but will only be published “in quality. numismatic “and in small quantities for collectors.
