Crack in Paris: drug addicts evacuated from the Jardins d’Eole and the Stalingrad sector

The Paris police prefect, Didier Lallement, decided this Friday, September 24 to evacuate drug addicts from the Eole gardens sector and the Stalingrad district (19th district), known to be the main points of attachment for crack users in the north-east of Paris.

“An operation is taking place, aimed at bringing together these people on the outskirts of the Place Auguste-Baron, Porte de La Villette, in a sector without residents in the immediate vicinity,” said the police headquarters in a press release.

For his part, Gérald Darmanin, the Minister of the Interior, indicated on Twitter that this evacuation operation was carried out on his orders. “On my instructions, the police headquarters is evacuating drug addicts from the Jardins d’Éole and Stalingrad sectors this morning. The fight against drugs is a daily struggle and I have heard the anger of residents, ”he commented.

In total, some 200 police officers were mobilized from 10 a.m. and for an hour to evacuate the hundred or so crack users and dealers present in the Riquet-Stalingrad sector to an area behind the ring road, near the Porte de la Villette.

Successive passes of arms between the town hall and the prefecture

This new place, near Place Auguste Baron, had already been planned in the spring to bring together crack users and avoid their dispersion after the evacuation of the Eole gardens decided by the mayor of Paris and Anne Hidalgo on June 30. Already at the time, for lack of a fixed fixed location, the Prefect of Police Didier Lallement was worried about the risk of drug addicts dispersing.

Tuesday evening September 21, Anne Hidalgo, going on site in front of the Gardens of Eole, recognized that the ban on drug addicts in the park “had a perverse effect which is to group them outside”, but, did- she immediately added, “the fact of leaving a large open-air crack market in the total tolerance of the police authorities, it is not acceptable”, implicitly targeting the prefect of police Didier Lallement.

In its press release, the prefecture of police seems to respond to the town hall again because, she writes, “the closure of the gardens of Éole to crack users decided by the town hall of Paris has been causing particularly high nuisance for residents since the beginning of July. rue Riquet and rue d’Aubervilliers, in a particularly unsuitable urban configuration: narrow and busy street, close proximity to homes and schools ”.
