Covid-19: These countries where the Omicron variant is dominant

The rapid spread of the Omicron variant is of growing concern as the holiday season approaches. While it is spreading in France, representing 33% of new cases in Paris according to Gabriel Attal, it is already dominant in several countries. Here is the list.

United States

The Omicron wave is sweeping the United States. Indeed, the new variant of Covid-19 is now dominant across the Atlantic. According to US authorities, 73.2% of new Covid-19 infections during the week ended December 18 were linked to the Omicron variant. In some states on the east coast of the United States, the proportion is even around 95% of cases.

In a tense context, Joe Biden detailed his strategy on Tuesday, December 21. It consists of increasing the number of tests, as well as the capacity for vaccination. The American president also intends to give more resources to hospitals.

Thus, the authorities will distribute 500 million tests free of charge. For its part, the federal government will mobilize a thousand doctors, nurses and medical personnel from the army. They can be deployed if necessary across the country, in January and February.

Already in a critical situation, the Omicron variant could drag the UK into a chaotic situation. On December 17, 93,045 people had tested positive for Covid-19, a record since the start of the pandemic.

But the situation could get worse. According to a group of government scientists, SPI-MO, which is part of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies, the number of contaminations could increase considerably. It would be valued between 600,000 and 2 million by the end of the month, if new restrictions are not immediately put in place.

According to them, hospitalizations could peak between 3,000 and 10,000 per day, against 900 on average currently, and deaths between 600 and 6,000 per day.

Faced with this risk, the Labor mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, announced Monday evening the cancellation of the festivities planned for the New Year.

Less than a month after its first detection in the country, the Omicron variant is now dominant in Denmark.

In the Scandinavian country, 13,558 new cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours. Never seen. Faced with this spread, Denmark has accelerated its vaccination campaign, while introducing more restrictive measures. Cultural spaces and places of leisure have in fact been closed for the next four weeks.

In Norway, health authorities announced that the number of Omicron cases had quadrupled in one week, from just over 900 cases on December 13 to 3,871 last Monday.
