an “unacceptable” political gesture for the unions

Will the major teacher demonstration scheduled for Thursday, January 20 in Paris take place? Several unions have called on teachers, parents of pupils and high school students to mobilize to demand “strong responses” face au « chaos » generated in education by the health crisis and changing protocols. Three months before the presidential election, they hope for an even more massive strike than that of last Thursday, when the Minister of Education, Jean-Michel Blanquer, is put in difficulty by the affair of his vacation in Ibiza .

But, on Tuesday evening, the organizers announced that their demonstration was “prohibited” by the Paris Police Prefecture. A measure assimilated by the unions to a political gesture “unacceptable”. “Not content with remaining deaf to the anger and demands of national education personnel, the government, through its representative, denies them the right to express it by demonstrating in Paris”, criticizes the General Confederation of Labor (CGT).

Criticism taken from the left. “I have never seen a story of a delay in an authorization for a demonstration when there is a social movement”, declared Wednesday morning on Radio J, the former minister Delphine Batho, spokesperson for the environmental candidate for the presidential election, Yannick Jadot, recalling that“in a democracy there is freedom to demonstrate”. MP LFI Mathilde Panot (Val-de-Marne) also accuses in a tweet “Prefect Lallement” from ” add fuel to the fire “.

Equitable relief

A version denied by the person concerned. The prefect Didier Lallement “did not ban the demonstration” strictly speaking, he said in a statement. Simply, the day of action having been declared out of time, he could not authorize it, he assures. Before any demonstration on the public highway, the organizers must declare it to the prefecture more than three days before the day concerned, according to the internal security code. “This delay makes it possible to organize the protection of the demonstrators, to examine the route with the organizers, to request possible reinforcements”, we explain to the police headquarters.

However, the unions have missed the boat. The prefecture says it did not receive the statement until Tuesday at 12:20 p.m.: “It’s not a missed deadline of a few hours, but of an entire day. » As a result, the prefect of police “could only note that the legal deadlines were not respected and that he could not therefore issue the receipt” which is authorization. “It is not a question of reducing freedom of expression, but the law is the same for all”, we add to the police headquarters. She invites the organizers to “drawing the consequences of the law”, that is to say, to postpone their mobilization for a few days.
