Info and awards

The Yas Marina circuit appeared on the Formula 1 calendar in 2009 and, like many other modern tracks, was designed by architect Hermann Tilke. Since its first season, and with the exception of the 2011, 2012 and 2013 campaigns, the track has hosted the closing round of the championships. The pilot title has already been decided on three times, in 2010, 2014 and 2016.

These are also the three most memorable editions of the event. In 2010, Fernando Alonso lost the championship on an erroneous strategic choice and Sebastian Vettel won the first of his four world crowns there. In 2014, Lewis Hamilton gleaned his second crown, in a final with double points, dominating from the take-off then taking advantage of the technical problems of Nico Rosberg. Finally, in 2016, the German took his revenge on the Briton by finishing second after a showdown and being crowned Champion for the only time in his career before retiring a few days later.

However, the track has undergone, since its last edition last year, changes in order to make it more conducive to the show. The first chicane is gone and the set of old 5-6-7 turns have been transformed into a widened hairpin. Then the old third chicane (old turns 11-12-13) was also removed to set up a long, quick turn to the left. Finally, each of the turns in the complex in the last sector that meander under the hotel has been opened inside in order to reduce the loss of grip and to help maintain the gaps.

5.281 km long and made up of 16 bends, the Yas Marina track begins with two fast sections where the main overtaking opportunities are located, before a winding and very technical final section. The event takes place at dusk, starting by day and ending at night. In the race, 58 laps will have to be completed, for a total distance of 306.298 km.

Weather report

Unsurprisingly, the weather should be very good above Yas Marina throughout the weekend with a sky that will in principle be rather cloudy, especially in the evening for representative sessions. The mercury should display, in nighttime conditions, 21-22 ° C.

Next race: Bahrain Grand Prix (March 18-20, 2022)
