Netflix is launching a new site that will show, each week, which series and movies were the most watched during the week, in terms of hours of content. The platform thus boasts of being more transparent. This is a very interesting behavior indicator, but you have to understand its nuances.
Netflix will now unveil more figures on its audiences every week. It is the video on demand subscription platform (SVOD) which announced this on November 16, 2021 in a blog post, and confirmed to our colleagues at Frandroid. Everything will be published, every Tuesday, on the Top 10 Netflix site.
There are different rankings, in which you can browse at will:
- A top 10 of the most watched English-language films around the world
- A top 10 of the most watched non-English films around the world
- A top 10 of the most watched English-language series around the world
- A top 10 of the most watched non-English series worldwide
But also :
- A top 10 of the most watched films by country
- A top 10 of the most watched series by country
These rankings will be updated every Tuesday, and take into account data from the past week. It is also possible to consult the past weekly rankings, to see the evolution of the success of a film or a series within the Top 10, for example.
How does Netflix classify this content?
It should be noted that the series and movies that count towards Netflix’s rankings aren’t just originals, which is a good point for the company when it comes to transparency – it could have decided, for example, to only show the Originals that it finances.
To classify content according to country, Netflix relies on an indicator that it considers today to be the most relevant: the volume of hours viewed in total, worldwide, per week and per content. For example, the original movie Bird Box (2018) garnered a total of 282 million hours viewed. As the film lasts two hours, we can therefore deduce that there are around 140 million accounts that have seen it – but this data must be qualified slightly, because it also includes re-views.
Considering that Netflix has 213 million monthly paying subscribers worldwide, this is an extremely impressive number.
During the week of November 8, 2021, which is the last taken into account by the official site at the time of this writing, we observe that the new season of the series Narcos: Mexico exploded everything in the world, garnering 50 million hours of viewing, far ahead of the second, the animated series Arcane, which gets “only” 34 million hours.
Limits, but a guarantee of transparency
It is obvious that the indicator of ” hourly volume »Viewed is not perfect: for example, we know that a series that has a lot of long episodes is more likely to be in the top 10 than a series with short episodes, because the viewers who end the season will accumulate more hours.
This is how it was shown, for example, that the French series Lupin Even though it has garnered a lot of viewing intentions on Netflix (i.e. when a viewer has watched at least 2 minutes of a program), it does not appear at all in the ranking of the programs whose subscribers have watched the most hours . For good reason: the first season has only 5 episodes, and can therefore end in almost 4 hours. For comparison, season 1 of Squid Games (currently the most watched series by hourly volume in the history of Netflix) has 9 episodes of about 50 minutes each, which makes a volume of 7:30 over the entire season.
However, we should not spit on this effort of transparency: by showing each week which series are the most viewed, Netflix gives several significant indicators:
- Which series and films “keep” Netflix subscribers the longest on the platform
- Which series and movies stay the longest in the platform’s Top 10, based on weeks, and which only stay a week or two?
- The difference in consumption practices depending on the country (we notice, for example, that in France, it is season 4 of the series Dynasty which is first in the Top 1, while in the world, it is Narcos Mexico which largely wins).
It should be noted, however, that the data by country is not quantified. We do not know, for example, how many French women and men watched hours of Dynasty, season 4: we just know that the American series is the first in the ranking this week of November 8 (and that it has been for three weeks); it will be necessary to be satisfied with it.
