Netflix releases a number of films and series in its catalog each week, without anyone noticing them or the platform officially announcing it. Large Screen reviews the new features added by Netflix from January 14 to 20, 2022, films and series combined in a non-exhaustive list.
What are the films and series not to be missed this weekend on the streaming platform?
Available on Netflix – Duration: 8 episodes of approximately 50min
What does it talk about ? After agreeing to restore old videotapes, an archivist finds himself at the heart of a mystery involving the missing director and a demonic cult.
Why do you have to watch it? Archivists are lovely people. Their profession has motivated or at least advanced many scenarios, delving into the past to learn to be wary of the present. Principle around which revolves this rather intriguing new series created by Rebecca Sonnenshine (screenwriter on Vampire Diaries) and Paul Harris Boardman (writingUrban Legend 2, Hellraiser 5, L’Exorcisme d’Emily Rose and deliver us from evil, ouch).
The CV of the showrunners does not sell dreams, but it should be noted the presence of James Wan in production and an endearing cast, made up of Mamoudou Athie (seen in Underwater), Dina Shihabi (Daredevil, Altered Carbon) and the very nice second knife Martin Donovan, who worked for Nolan or PT Anderson. It remains to be seen what these few episodes will do with the legacy in which they are part. (we obviously think of Ring). Shivering B-series or lazy jumpscare tank? Verdict in a few days.
Available on Netflix – Duration: 1h37
What does it talk about ? A mysterious house unites a poor family, an anxious developer and an exasperated landlord across different eras.
Why do you have to watch it? Because this stop-motion animated black comedy, The House, seems to work a quite exciting acidity and strangeness. The organic aspect of stop-motion immediately offers plasticity and abundant aesthetics, all crowned by an evocative potential based on the stylistic work, but also on all the thematic and poetic possibilities around the work of the places.
You also have to see it because the team gathered around these three 25min short films is highly intriguing. Indeed, the different films/episodes are all made by different creators such as Paloma Baeza, Niki Lindroth von Bahr and the duo Emma De Swaef and Marc James Roels. These different universes will meet, all overseen by Enda Walsh who is in charge of writing the entire anthology. On the casting side, we will find the pretty voices of Mia Goth, Jarvis Cocker, Helena Bonham Carter and Matthew Goode, a very fine collection of actors.
after life saison 3
Available on Netflix – Duration: 6 episodes
What does it talk about ? Having lost his will to live since the death of his wife, journalist Tony Johnson makes himself insufferable in order to keep anyone who tries to help him at bay. In the third season, he is no longer so violently irascible against life, but he still struggles to fill the void left by the death of his wife.
Why do you have to watch it? Because if you endured Tony Johnson’s punishments for the first two seasons, then it would be a shame to miss the third, which should definitely allow the guy to heal his wounds. Acclaimed by the public, After Life turned out to be a very human and intimate experience of mourning, simple and powerful.
The series of Ricky Gervais will therefore end in this last part, and should allow him to evolve the game of his character, less acidic than usual (although the trailer for season 3 does not lack spice). If you are not too depressed after these last months of pandemic, confinements and political adventures, we can only recommend it to you. At worst, tell yourself it’s like John Wick (a man loses his wife and has a dog to comfort himself), but without the action and the guns.
WELCOME TO MARWEN
On Netflix January 15, 2022 – Duration: 1h56
What does it talk about ? Having become amnesic after a violent attack, an artist creates a miniature world to overcome his trauma and relearn how to live.
Why do you have to watch it? Because it’s directed by the immense Robert Zemeckis, director of Contact, The Legend of Beowulf and the trilogy Back to the future, and that he signs here a crazy and generous film, although imperfect. The portrait of this artist who must learn to overcome his trauma through creation is of a very touching and touching tenderness and poetry. This same concept allows the filmmaker to extend his constant concern for the technicality of his cinema, resulting in a stimulating dynamic pleasure.
Add to this the deep and touching admiration that Zemeckis has for the feminine, which manifests itself in Welcome Marwen by the whole host of strong female characters who serve as new role models, of strength and drive, for Mark’s character. So certainly, the repetitive nature of the story and its lack of renewal of the stakes make it a little too programmatic and cyclical, stifling the spectator’s emotion a little. But despite this, Marwen remains a sincere and flown object as we need more.
Our review of Welcome Marwen
the front runner
On Netflix January 16, 2022 – Duration: 1h54
What does it talk about ? The campaign of Gary Hart, candidate for the 1988 US presidential election, is suddenly derailed when rumors of infidelity spark a huge scandal.
Why do you have to watch it? Because just before following in his father’s footsteps by realizing the Ghostbusters: Legacy of 2021, Jason Reitman completed his filmography, already rich in seven feature films, with a biopic on Senator Gary Hart with The Front Runner.
The film adapts the novel All the Truth Is Out : The Week Politics Went Tabloid by Matt Bai, who also worked on the text transformation. On the casting side, we find Vera Farmiga, Kaitlyn Dever, Sara Paxton and JK Simmons alongside a Hugh Jackman who had just come out of the swan song of his Wolverine with the Logan by James Mangold. A nice team gathered to tell, through this feature film, this moment when voyeuristic impulses have taken over the media without any political consideration.
On Netflix January 19, 2022 – Duration: 1h36
An aesthetic halfway between West Side Story and Un, Dos, Tres, we love it
What does it talk about ? Izzy, a bubbly New York hairdresser, is hired for the wedding of a prince charming… who has a crush on her. Who will win: the heart or the reason?
Why do you have to watch it? Because we loved Crazy Rich Asians, which is a total guilty pleasure. Yes, you’ll probably wander past the millennial update of a TV movie that chronicles a crush between a digital marketing executive and her widowed lumberjack childhood friend, but after all, aren’t we here for that? ?
For this tragic and screaming, unreasonable and inevitable love story, your masters of ceremony will be Mena Massoud, who has already played Aladdin alongside Will Smith, but also Laura Marano (Lady Bird, l’excellent SuperGrave). Jacque Drew and his absolutely eclectic career (from Jane Campion to Power Rangers, Passing by Evil Dead, there is only one step) will also enrich the cast. Perfect for a slumber party or while you close your eyes waiting for the one to steal your heart, no one will judge you watching two gorgeous actors in their 20s romping around in a castle.
