new big bad details in international trailer

International promotional material for the film The Batman revealed important new details about the plot and great nemesis of the next Dark Knight.

As he rises from the ashes of Justice League in the next one The Flash With the return of Ben Affleck under the mask, Batman will also move away from the DCEU to be reintroduced as Robert Pattinson in a parallel universe. The film The Batman directed by Matt Reeves will thus give a new impetus to the justice of Gotham – darker and tortured -, but also to the many characters who revolve around him, starting with Commissioner James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) and Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), obligatory in any Batman story worthy of the name.

Inspired by comics Batman: Year One and Batman : Un long Halloween, the film will thus present the beginnings of Bruce Wayne as Dark Knight, but also several of his cult enemies, in particular Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell) alias the Pingiuin and Carmine Falcone (John Turturro). The two villains should however quickly take a back seat, in particular the Penguin which will be further exploited in its spin-off HBO Max, Edward Nashton, aka the Sphinx, being the main antagonist of the storyline.

The Spinx in The Batman

Much less extrovert and whimsical than Jim Carrey’s version in Batman ForeverPaul Dano’s villain looks like a psychotic, violent and cruel serial killer embarked on a ruthless manhunt. The previous trailer for The Batman had previously teased the cat-and-mouse game between the criminal and the masked billionaire, but a more recent trailer shared in Japan revealed that the Sphinx will also have another target in its sights.

And the fan of puzzles obviously has a grudge against Batman, he especially has one against Bruce Wayne, of which he seems to know the double identity (unless the editing of the video plays on it to mislead the public). In the Japanese trailer, a shot shows a wall covered with newspaper articles mentioning the Waynes.

In one of the photos, we can see Bruce’s parents and himself as a child next to another little boy who appears to be the future criminal with the annotation: “If only I knew then … what I know now“. It remains to be seen what exactly the Sphinx accuses him of and what his connection with the Wayne family may be.

The Batman hits theaters on March 2, 2022.
