As Europe is in the grip of a new wave of the pandemic, the appearance of a new variant is pushing governments to toughen the measures in force which, it goes without saying, impact cinemas. The countries which made the most drastic choice, namely that of the national closure of cinemas, are Austria and Slovakia. In the Netherlands, cinemas are required to shut down at 5 p.m. Wearing a mask becomes compulsory again during screenings in Belgium and Hungary. Only spectators in possession of a health pass can go to the theaters in Catalonia and Croatia. In Romania, in addition to the two aforementioned measures, the gauge is reduced to 30%, while Germany further limits entry to theaters according to the “2G plus” plan (access reserved for spectators who are immune and have a test fast negative). The world geography remains very diverse: the health pass is requested by Colombian, South Korean and Los Angeles operators. On the other hand, the cinemas in Auckland, New Zealand, stopped since mid-August, can finally reopen to the public. The overall attendance is strained by the entry into force of these new restrictions, and the month of December, eagerly awaited to replenish the counters during the holiday season, does not start as expected.

International French cinema attendance fell by 29% compared to the previous month, but its counter still shows more than 1 million admissions, and this for the 6e times in 2021. The number of films shown is increasing significantly; on the other hand, the number of releases and the average number of spectators per title fell slightly. The impact of the new restrictions announced above is already visible. Minority productions, major protagonists of the first half of 2021, represented this month in particular by Julie (in 12 chapters) and The Father, see their share reduced further in favor of majority productions which are at the origin of 84% of tickets sold by French films. With regard to the language spoken, the success of the Wolf and lion raises the share of foreign language productions to 45% of the monthly score. The erosion therefore continues on the side of productions in French: their contribution goes from 3 admissions out of 4 in September to 2 out of 3 in October, then to 1 in 2 in November.

The trifecta is made up of 2 films that each brought together more than 100,000 moviegoers, including 1 more than 300,000! The mainly French productions are losing ground and posting values below those of October: 13 bring together more than 10,000 spectators (-10), 9 more than 20,000 (-5), 4 more than 50,000 (-2) and 2 more than 100,000 (-1). Nevertheless, they remain in line with those identified last August and richer in spectators than during the first 7 months of 2021.

The gender distribution is being renewed. The adventure / thriller film has established itself as the leading genre and is at the origin of nearly 1 in 3 French cinema admissions abroad in November. Drama and comedy keep their place on the podium, each attracting more than 20% of the monthly spectators. With the exception of biopic / war / story, the market share of other genres is below 10%.

Without a doubt, November is the month of the Wolf and the Lion. Much awaited after the worldwide success of Mia and the white lion and its 4.52 million admissions outside France, the new production by Gilles de Maistre landed on 10 markets and shone among the top 5 Spanish, Slovak and Czech the week of the start, even in the 2e instead of Lithuanian and Polish. It has already recorded more than 100,000 tickets in Spain (130,000) and Poland (123,000), and is illustrated as the most-viewed predominantly French production of 2021 in many Eastern European countries.

  • Eiffel made his first appearance on the podium carried by 35,000 tickets in Spain and 31,000 in Germany, not to mention 69,000 spectators gathered in Oceania and 62,000 in the Benelux.
  • Aline benefits from the 3e largest release combination reserved for a French film in Quebec since 1995 (90 theaters) and moved to the 3e top local place thanks to nearly 30,000 admissions during its 1re week of operation.
  • Pil once again confirms the interest of the Russian public for the tricolor animation (72,000 admissions).
  • The British and Irish are renewing their passion for French auteur films by giving a warm welcome to Little mom (30,000 spectators).
  • So many Italians are not lacking The event : it is in Italy, from where it left with the Golden Lion of the Venice Mostra, that the drama begins its international career and it offers itself the 10e local ranking place.
  • Annette, Benedetta and Titanium continue to appeal to foreign cinephiles, and Delicious manages to mobilize 24,000 Germans despite the restrictions in force in the country.
