Are previous Spider-Man movies hot with the MCU?

The Pop N Chill Youtube channel devotes a video to The Matrix Online, the prequel to Matrix 4.

With the introduction of the multiverse in Phase 4 of Marvel Studios and especially in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe sees itself completely upset. What about previous Spider-Man movie adaptations? Do Sam Raimi and Marc Webb movies fit into MCU canon?

Spider-Man : No Way Home realized by Jon Watts is the third standalone neighborhood friendly spider adventure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Third opus of the second reboot of the character in the cinema, the film calls on the former interpreters of the weaver. If the participation of Tobey Maguire and D’Andrew Garfield could be raised with a simple blink of an eye – the actors could have interpreted other variations of Peter Parker unrelated to the previous films – the characters come well, just like the villains, from the universes of Sam Raimi and of Marc Webb.

Spider-Man’s Curse

Tobey Maguire was the first to play the Marvel hero in the trilogy of Sam Raimi. And Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007) should have known a fourth opus, Sony Pictures decided the time to reboot the franchise. It was at this point that the studio entrusted the role of the weaver to Andrew Garfield. The actor plays Peter Parker twice under the direction of the director Marc Webb.

However, the franchise’s curse strikes once again. Indeed, The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man: Hero’s Fate (2014) was to have a third opus, but also a spin-off centered on the Sinister Six. Ultimately, Sony Pictures, who owns the film rights to Spider-Man, is getting closer to Marvel Studios. Once again, the character is rebooted in the cinema. The role is entrusted to the young actor Tom Holland who for the first time embodies the character in Captain America : Civil War.

The MCU saves Spider-Man

The inclusion of Spider-Man in the MCU seems to ward off the curse. After Captain America : Civil War, Tom Holland finds the character six times with stand-alone films, collective films and cameos: Spider-Man : Homecoming (2017), Avengers : Infinity War (2018), Avengers : Endgame (2019), Spider-Man : Far From Home (2019), Venom : Let There Be Carnage (2021) et Spider-Man : No Way Home (2021).

After the success of the cartoon Sony PicturesSpider-Man : Into the Spider-Verse‘(2018), which features multiple versions of the Weaver via the multiverse and the upcoming introduction of the Earths multiverse into the MCU, it becomes obvious to the studio and Marvel Studios that they have to make a Spider-Verse in live action. If the third opus were to initially feature Perter Parke facing Kraven the Hunter, the decision is made to ‘Spider-Man : No Way Home‘a film that will have a significant impact on the MCU multiverse.

Movies with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are canonical with the MCU

With this third opus, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, who couldn’t bring a satisfying conclusion to their character, re-emerge in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The participation of the two actors allows to offer fans a conclusion to their previous interpretations, but also to include in the timeline of the MCU the films of Sam Raimi and of Marc Webb. A decision that allows not to forget what brought to the character Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, but also to be recognized by the youngest spectators.

Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004), Spider-Man 3 (2007), The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man: Hero’s Fate (2014) are now canonical in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Follow the link for the MCU’s Multiverse Timeline.
