After 1917, Sam Mendes gets a nice casting for his next film Empire of Light

The cast ofEmpire of Light, the next film from director Sam Mendes after 1917, continues to grow with beautiful names.

After Skyfall and Spectre the two penultimate films of the James Bond saga, followed by 1917, his impressive war film in sequence shot, Sam Mendes will change register for his next feature film Empire of Light. With influences closer to his first feature films, notably Rebel wedding, Away We Go or American Beauty – for which the filmmaker won the Oscar for best director in 1999 – his new film will be closer to the romantic drama than nervous and spectacular action film.

In addition to getting back behind the camera for the first time since 2019, Mendes is also responsible for writing the script and producing this still nebulous love story, which will take place on the south coast of England in the 1980s and will involve “an old and beautiful cinemaThe project is still in pre-production and only the names of Olivia Colman, Oscar winner for her role in The Favorite, et Micheal Ward (The Old Guard, The A List) had been announced by the press. Sam Mendes will also recall Oscar-winning cinematographer Roger Deakins for his work on 1917 and Blade Runner 2049.

But more recently Deadline reported that after filming Mothering Sunday, Colin Firth (The speech of a king, Kingsman : Services secrets) will find Olivia Colman – who is expected to land the lead female role – but also Sam Mendes for whom he shot a few scenes in 1917. The two will have the opportunity to give the answer to Toby Jones (Captain America, Jurassic World 2, First Cow), that the public will find before in the poster of the films Tetris, Indiana Jones 5 and The Pale Blue Eye by Scott Cooper alongside Christian Bale and Gillian Anderson.

The cast will also be expanded with the arrival of Crystal Clarke (Assassin’s Creed, The force awakens) and Tanya Moodie (L’Ascension de Skywalker, Motherland) in the Searchlight Pictures film. However, no role has been specified and no release date has been communicated.
