The mixed reception given to the Marvel film The Eternals contrasts sharply with the breathless expectation aroused by Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The release of the film The Eternals has caused immense disappointment among many fans of the Marvel universe, all the more after the enormous marketing developed around the film. This disappointment raised many questions, notably about “superhero fatigue”, as if the film marked the beginning of the end of the movie. Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

However, the latest trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home quickly put an end to this possibility. Currently it has been viewed more than 28 million times on Youtube. This enticing trailer (along with the many theories surrounding the film) promises to be a hit with fans of all ages. Without a doubt, the film has many cameos and more easter eggs.

The film The Eternals isn’t the worst Marvel in terms of admissions (it’s even the franchise’s most interesting failure), but the film’s inability to thrill an extremely warm fan base shows just how much recognition branding matters, even within the MCU.

With the help of the brilliant Kevin Feige, Marvel has already elevated obscure comic book characters to pop culture stars. However, The Eternals seemed oddly out of touch with the entire Marvel Universe. Indeed, the film in no way gives the impression of setting the stage for a new, more ambitious phase of the MCU.

Fans seem to be much more interested in the connections between the various films in the franchise. These ties have been the essence of Marvel since the very first Avengers in 2012, but now they cross time, space and copyright. The Spider-Man portrayed by Tom Holland will surely be joined by past Spider-Man ghosts (despite the trailer’s attempts to hide the multiple cameos that have already leaked) and future Marvel ghosts. So, fans could see the introduction of Miles Morales, from Gwen Stacy (aka Spider-Gwen) or a new Venom.

It is even possible (although unlikely) that there will be an introduction of 4 Fantastic or some X-Men through the new holes of the multiverse. Sony is in the process of creating its own parallel cinematic universe populated with Spider-Man characters. This universe now seems likely to reach and touch the MCU, occasionally.

Also, it is worth noting that it is Sony’s animation masterpiece, Spider-Man: New Generation, which actually prepared audiences for the MCU’s multiverse, proving the concept’s creative potential.

There are so many reasons to speculate and get excited about Spider-Man: No Way Home. Now, it doesn’t matter if this movie will be good: its connection to the old Marvel ones as well as the limitless possibilities offered by the multiverse make this movie the next big step in the MCU.
