50 years of Porsche Design: special edition of the 911

Fifty years ago, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the designer of the original 911, founded the design studio Porsche Design together with his brother Hans-Peter. As of 2022, the design agency has branches in Austria (Zell am See), Germany (Berlin and Ludwigsburg), the USA (Los Angeles) and China (Shanghai).

“When you reconsider the function of a thing, the form sometimes emerges almost by itself” (FA Porsche).

Over the years, Porsche Design has become known for its utensils, household appliances and industrial products with purist design and authentic materials, often in collaboration with big names such as KEF, LaCie or Panasonic. Think luxury items like watches, sunglasses or leather goods, but also functional products like computer mice or external hard drives.

On the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary, Porsche Design has developed a special edition of its iconic 911. This 911 Edition 50Y Porsche Design is based on a Targa 4 GTS and was designed with black as the main color for the bodywork and the interior, in reference to the legendary Chronograph 1 watch designed by FA Porsche in 1972.

It will also feature stripes on the sidewalls and logos specific to the 50th anniversary of Porsche Design. In addition, the 750-piece limited series is entitled to seventies upholstery with a diamond pattern for the central parts of the seats, as well as a red seconds hand from the Subsecond Porsche Design clock in the Sport Chrono Package, which is series in this case.

To complete the link with the past, Porsche Classic has restored a 911 S 2.4 Targa from 1972, which at the time was the top version of the range. This meticulously restored example sports the same colors as the Porsche Design Edition 50Y, as evidenced by the images distributed by Porsche – which show how much the 911 has evolved in every way over the years.

For enthusiasts, Porsche Design also offers the Chronograph 1 1972 Limited Edition, a limited edition of 500 pieces of the Chronograph 1 with a historic logo and inscription. In addition, the anniversary offering includes several so-called “limited capsule” collections in the fashion, footwear and sportswear lines, as well as in the luggage, accessories and special eyewear lines.

Finally, the Porsche Museum is also getting its hands dirty with a special exhibition that opens its doors today, January 19. The 911 Edition 50Y Porsche Design is now available to order. A guaranteed collector’s item, but for a price of €206,466.67… The Chronograph 1 1972 Limited Edition can already be ordered for €6,972 on the Porsche Design website.
