Lalela, the new Miss South Africa: ” I used to suck my thumb ”

Lalela Mswane had an exceptional evening on Saturday, October 16, 2021. At the Grand Arena, GrandWest in Cape Town, this young 24-year-old ballerina dancer and model was awarded the coveted Miss South Africa crown. Surprised and moved by her coronation, she could not help but burst into tears.

“I really didn’t expect it. I was so surprised… because I was already so happy and blessed to have reached the top three. So, for me, it’s really the icing on the cake ”, she said at the microphone of Catriona Gray (ex Miss Philippine and ex Miss Universe 2018), invited as one of the backstage presenters of the ceremony.

A law graduate from the University of Pretoria, Lalela has already started flirting with stardom in recent years through her modeling career. She has, in particular, played in many commercials. And, for a year, she has been the face of perfume David Tlale, famous South African fashion designer.

After her victory last Saturday, Lalela Mswane indulged in some confidences. Stressing in advance that this would surprise most people, she revealed, among other things, that she has a habit of sucking her thumb. “I sucked my thumb until I was 18”she laughed. “I just found comfort in it to a point where I was addicted to it and I couldn’t even fall asleep without sucking my thumb. I quit after one day when I realized that I had fallen asleep without doing it and that I was not dead ”.

Before leaving the magnificent Arena, the beautiful Lalela, from KwaSokhulu, near Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal, made this beautiful statement: “I think it’s important that people stop seeing Miss Afsud as just a beauty pageant, which is why I’ve often avoided pageantry. Miss Afsud is an empowerment platform for women and could be a launching pad for so many other opportunities ”.

The new Miss South Africa left with, as rewards, 1 million rand (about 38 million CFA francs) in cash and prizes worth 3 million rand (more than 114 million CFA francs) including a brand new Mercedes Benz C-Class and a one-year stay in a stunning, fully furnished apartment in Central Square Sandton.

Several former beauty queens were present at this ceremony on Saturday evening. There are four Miss Universe laureates: the Mexican Andrea Meza (Miss Universe 2020), the German-Philippine Pia Wurtzbach (Miss Universe 2015), the Philippine Catriona Gray (Miss Universe 2018) and the South African Zuzubini Tunzi (Miss Universe 2019 ). The latter two were invited as backstage presenters.
