Valérie Lemercier offers a biopic on a singer inspired by Celine Dion with period songs that respect the chronology (composed before the context of the story) as well as the songs of the star (from 1982 to 2016) interpreted especially by Victoria Sio. We can hear in common thread an instrumental by Nat King Cole (“Nature Boy”) which returns as a theme. In addition, the song “Ordinaire” frames the film, in opening in a version of Robert Charlebois of 1970, then at the end of the film interpreted and adapted by Céline Dion (“I am a very ordinary girl. Sometimes, I have no longer want to do anything … “).

COMPILATIONS

Funk & Cinema

– Wagram / Compilation Cinezik (19 novembre 2021) – 2 LP

As for Soul, a similar genre also honored by the collection, emblematic artists of Funk have been able to put their universe at the service of cinema for original creations, often for Blaxploitation films (American cultural and social movement that has revalued the image of African Americans), all dated between 1971 and 1974: Melvin Van Peebles, both director and composer, collaborates with Earth Wind & Fire for his film “Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song” (1971), considered the launch of this cinematic genre. Isaac Hayes (“Shaft”, “Truck Turner”), Curtis Mayfield (“Super Fly”), Roy Ayers (“Coffy”), James Brown (“Black Caesar”), Willie Hutch (“Foxy Brown”), JJ will follow. Johnson (“Willie Dynamite”), Joe Simon (“Cleopatra Jones”), Gene Page (“Blacula”). This style marked by a frenzied rhythm section (guitar, bass, drums) and unbridled brass, marked the urban thrillers. under the baton of Lalo Schifrin (“Bullitt”) More recently, funk gives rhythm to the comedies with guitarist and singer George Benson in “Big Business” by Jim Abrahams (1988), the funk group Dyke and The Blazers in “Sex between friends ”(Friends With Benefits, with Justin Timberlake, 2011), with Gil Scott Heron (“ Dope ”, 2015) and even for the superhero movie with the New Orleans quartet The Meters in“ Hancock ”by Peter Berg (with Will Smith, 2008).

Soul & Cinema

– Wagram / Compilation Cinezik (19 novembre 2021) – 2 LP

As for Funk, a neighboring genre also honored by the collection, emblematic Soul artists of the 70s were able to put their world at the service of cinema for original creations: Marvin Gaye (“Trouble Man”), Bobby Womack (“Across 110th Street “), The Impressions (” Three the Hard Way “). This popular African-American music derived from gospel and rhythm and blues has been called upon by filmmakers from all ages, up to recent blockbusters: with the singers Etta James (“Mission: Impossible III”, “Rain Man”) and Nina Simone (“The Big Lebowski”), Wilson Pickett (“Forrest Gump”), Sam Cooke (“The Green Hornet”), or Solomon Burke (“Unbreakable”). The eminently associated singer and pianist Ray Charles had the honor of a biopic (in 2004, he was played by Jamie Foxx in “Ray”) while recording his songs in numerous films (from “Raging Bull “to” Deadpool “). In 2011, William Bell, mainly known for his ballads, illustrates in Jeff Nichols’ “Loving” an interracial romance in segregationist America of 1958. This soft music, both romantic and melancholy, goes well with love and dramas.
