Zoom on the “refuge” house of Tom Selleck where he has lived secretly with his family since 1988

Tom Selleck has been one of the most famous actors for decades, but instead of living a lavish life in Hollywood, he prefers a quiet life with his family on his ranch in Ventura, California.

It’s not always easy to stay humble and keep fame from going to your head, especially if everyone is telling you how awesome you are. Fortunately, Tom Selleck never focused on the pursuit of stardom.

For over three decades, Tom Selleck and his wife for over 30 years have lived on a ranch in California. Although ranch life hasn’t always been easy, the actor once said it keeps him sane.

Born in Detroit in January 1945, Selleck’s foray into the entertainment industry dates back to the late 1960s, when he held minor roles in television series and films.

It was the “Magnum, PI” series that propelled his career to stardom. Selleck successfully played Hawaii-based investigator Thomas Magnum for eight years. He even won a Primetime Emmy Award, for his role as an outstanding lead actor.

Selleck went on to appear in “The Closer” and “Friends”, but is currently one of the main stars of “Blue Bloods”. Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, and a few other cast members have been on the show for 12 seasons, which equates to 11+ years.

Even though Selleck’s career is quite impressive, it could have been even better. Unlike other celebrities, he has always favored a balance between work and time spent with his family. This is why he left “Magnum, PI” in 1987.

Although Mack gave up her career to be with Selleck, she has no regrets.

He might have been at the height of his fame, but he’s always been a private person and didn’t like all the attention the show gave him. Before saying he didn’t think he was cut out to handle stardom, Selleck explained:

“I knew intellectually what it would mean in terms of being a public figure, but until you experienced it, there is no way to understand it.”

The actor also revealed that he left “Magnum, PI” not because he didn’t like or was tired of it, but because he was tired “of it”. He wanted a three-dimensional life, a life he didn’t have back then.

In 1987, when Selleck left the show, he married his second and current wife, Jillie Joan Mack. He once admitted that Mack could light up a room with his “joie de vivre” and “effervescent quality.”

A year after getting married, Mack, a former English actress and dancer, and Selleck bought a ranch in Ventura, California. At the time, the ranch was owned by Dean Martin. According to reports, the farm has more than 1,500 native trees.

When he has to leave the house to shoot “Blue Bloods” in New York, Mack takes over. Selleck once said that he and his wife were very independent, and that they had a lot of yin and yang in them.

Although Mack gave up her career to be with Selleck, she doesn’t regret it. A friend of the couple pointed out that Mack loved her life as a ranch owner because her happiness was mostly with her animals, and her companion dogs and horses were always with her.

Mack isn’t the only one in love with the ranch. Before buying the property, Selleck noticed that he needed to regain his anonymity to replenish his soul. The farm therefore served as a perfect retreat away from Hollywood.

He had chosen to take a break. But people started to worry about his successful career when he reduced his workload to a few projects a year. He ended up admitting that he didn’t like the roles that were offered to him.

Selleck and Mack were prosecuted for stealing water trucks from a fire hydrant at a construction site during the drought.

Although he had to deal with newspaper reports claiming he was finished or gone from Hollywood, this “great lull” allowed him to put a lot of things into perspective. Today, the actor is confident that his relationships with his family and his ranch have kept him sane. Selleck said:

“I left Magnum to have a family. It took a while to get off the train, but I’m trying really hard to balance, and this ranch has helped me.”

Currently, Selleck and Mack have been married for 34 years. Their first and only child, Hannah, was born in 1988, and the couple felt the ranch was the best environment for her to grow up as well.

He also confessed that maintaining a marriage was paramount, and that wanting to get away from work to be with his family helped their relationship.

While the ranch had a positive impact on Selleck and Mack’s romance, bringing it to life hasn’t always been a walk in the park. Selleck maintains the 63 acres himself, doing everything from road repairs to brush clearing.

Unfortunately, the California drought wiped out its avocado plants. But it’s not like they’re profitable. Selleck said in 2007 that his lawyers were selling “like hot cakes”, but a few years later he admitted it was hard to make a living.

Things took an unusual turn in 2015 when Selleck and Mack were prosecuted for stealing water trucks from a fire hydrant, serving a construction site during the drought.

According to the Calleguas Municipal Water District, Selleck would have used a large “water tender” type truck to make at least 12 trips between the fire hydrant and his property for almost two years. Some trips may have gone unnoticed, but it is impossible to determine how much water was stolen.

Authorities in Calleguas revealed that Selleck was discovered carrying water in late 2013, so they sent two letters of cease and desist. The actor ignored them, as he continued to steal water.

Selleck was then ordered to pay $ 21,000 to cover the costs of a private investigation and more money in terms of damages. He was also prohibited from withdrawing more water from the Calleguas Municipal Water District for his personal use.
