Matthew McConaughey is one of the most famous actors in the world, thanks to the many roles he played in some of the biggest films.

The actor rose to prominence after starring in ‘Dazed and Confused.’ Thereafter, his career continued to grow. He starred in hit movies like “The Wedding Planner”, “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “Interstellar”.

Thanks to his excellent portrayal of different characters in movies, he has received many accolades and awards, including the Oscar for Best Actor.

However, before being who he is today, McConaughey had a difficult childhood and went eight years without speaking to his mother.

During an interview with Today in November 2020, McConaughey opened up about his upbringing. The star actor, who grew up in Texas, recalled that his parents’ behavior towards him could be considered child abuse, although he pleaded not to think so.

When asked if his parents’ behavior was wrong, the actor, who shared some of his tough childhood stories in his memoir “Greenlights,” replied:

“I was scared at the time, but even then and immediately after, I never questioned the love mom and dad had or the love they gave us.”

He also explained that he told the sometimes gory, ugly and violent stories of his childhood because “these were the times when the love we had – which was never questioned – was most challenged. , but never had a chance to be beaten.”

When asked if he considered his parents to be abusive, Mr McConaughey replied that it was not fair for anyone else to say so if a sane person aware of what s happened says that is not the case. He explained :

‘I’m not in denial about reality. My mum and dad are not in denial. So I don’t know if it’s really fair for someone to tell someone else,’ Oh, you were victimized, and you were abused’.”

There was a period when McConaughey and his mother Kay weren’t on good terms. The actor opened up about it during an emotional appearance alongside his mother on “Red Table Talk” in November 2020.

McConaughey and her mother explained that their dispute began when she fell in love with her newfound stardom in the mid-1990s.

After McConaughey shot to fame with his performance in “A Time to Kill,” he started calling his mom every Sunday.

However, Kay was not answering the phone. Instead, it was a fan of his doing it. The actor therefore felt betrayed by his mother when she disclosed his personal information to the media.

In fact, the actor explained that he tries to find a balance with fame and tells him things. However, some of the things he told her find their way into the papers three days later.

But Mr McConaughey grew fed up with his mother’s behavior after she invited a film crew from the tabloid news program ‘Hard Copy’ to their family home. He revealed:

“I call her, and, of course, she watches it too, so she picks up the phone, and I hear the same damn broadcast in the background!”

He added that Kay told him she didn’t think he would find out what she had done. McConaughey added that he and his mother couldn’t communicate because of his fame. He revealed that for years he didn’t share certain things with her because he was trying to find his balance.

Mr McConaughey told his mother that open lips sink boats, and that many people seek information about things that do not concern them. He revealed:

“I couldn’t talk to him like my mother for about eight years.”

Kay also opened up about her relationship with her son at the time and admitted she enjoyed his fame more than he did.

Gradually, Kay and McConaughey mended their relationship as she learned to respect her boundaries. He also learned how to manage his life in the spotlight.

Mr McConaughey explained that after eight years of not speaking to his mother, his boat was well built and he did not think she could sink it.

So he told his mom to hit the red carpet, talk to the press, and tell them whatever stories she wanted. He admitted that she has done very well since.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Kay was quarantined with McConaughey and her family in Texas. During an appearance on “Live With Kelly and Ryan,” McConaughey opened up about the experience.

He said the benefit for his mother of living with her family was that she could see her grandchildren every day instead of twice a month.

He also told Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith and Adrienne Banfield Norris on “Red Table Talk” that his mother’s stay at his house had been enjoyable.

In addition, his mother said: “I love being with my grandchildren so much. I am very comfortable with them. Matthew is a very good son. I tell him that all the time. He is good with me.

McConaughey is married to model and actress Camila Alves. He met her at a party with his friend Lance Armstrong in the spring of 2006.

The ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ actor was making margaritas at a Hollywood club when he spotted Alves across the road. McConaughey wasn’t looking for love the night he met Alves, but he found himself looking for it hard.

So he told himself to take a step back, relax, and that Alves would come if she had to. She showed up and sat right in front of McConaughey, dazzling him as she did.

McConaughey failed in his attempts to beckon Alves and got motivated before going to meet him. He invited her and her friend to his table to have one of the drinks he had prepared.

Another test came to the actor when Alves started speaking Portuguese. However, he rose to the occasion and conversed with her in a way he is still proud of.

Alves and McConaughey had a great connection. However, she didn’t know who he was when they first met. The lovebirds went on their first date three nights after they met, and he wanted to meet her again afterwards.

McConaughey thinks Alves came into her life at the right time and admitted he wanted to date her ever since.

On June 9, 2012, the couple tied the knot but were already parents before getting married. They welcomed their first child and son Levi on July 7, 2008. They welcomed a daughter Vida two years later on January 3, 2010.

McConaughey and Alves’ second son, Livingston, was born on December 28, 2012, making them the parents of three children.

In his memoir, “Greenlights,” McConaughey revealed that it was his first son, Levi, who made him think about marrying Alves.

Levi asked her why her mother wasn’t a McConaughey. The actor replied to his young son that he didn’t want to marry Alves because he didn’t feel the need to.

McConaughey then explained that he must have felt the need to marry Alves before doing so. However, Levi asked him if he was afraid of marriage.

Mr McConaughey realized he was scared and sought advice from his pastor and family members on how to have a successful marriage.

Since getting married in 2012, McConaughey and Alves have remained a sweet couple. When asked the secret to their happy marriage, the ‘Greenlights’ author replied that it was about not making the straight lines twisted.

He advised couples to deal with problems immediately before they escalate and to make the good times last when things are going well.
