Adrian Chiles has revealed that his family were “horrified” that he would star in the Strictly Come Dancing 2021 Christmas special, but described the experience as “a real privilege”.

On Christmas Day, the TV presenter will face First Dates star Fred Sirieix, singer Anne-Marie, The Repair Shop star Jay Blades, comedian Mel Giedroyc and presenter Moira Stuart in the ballroom.

Adrian, 54, was paired with new professional dancer Jowita Przystal, the duo performing an American Christmas Smooth to White by Otis Redding.

Prior to the show, the radio presenter said that although his mother is a “big fan” of the BBC series, she was taken aback by the idea of her son being a part of it.

Recalling how his friends and family reacted to the news, he said: “They were absolutely, for a man and a woman, horrified!

“Even though my mom is a huge fan of the show, she said, ‘Oh my God! “”

Fortunately, they came quickly when he shared snippets of how he was doing during rehearsals.

“But as soon as we sent them the first practice videos, they all said, ‘Oh, okay, he might not be awful after all! ” “, he added.

Adrian explained that if he had been asked 11 days ago how he felt about the Strictly Special, he would have said he was “absolutely terrified and full of regret, remorse and wanting to leave the country”.

Now, however, he said he ‘wouldn’t have missed it’, stating: ‘It has been a real privilege, and I’m not just saying that, to meet Jowita, to work intensely on something and just focus on that. .

“Everyone is so sweet, I never use the word ‘vibe’, but the vibe is fantastic! “

While Adrian and Jowita seem to have hit it off, he admitted he had “cut the wind” the first time he tried to lift her in practice.

However, the former One Show host was full of good things to say about the show, describing how it impacted his attitude.

“Fear and doubt get you nowhere. I am 54 years old, it may be too late to change my mental state, but it was a wake-up call to do so. I’m serious about it, ”he said.

The Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special airs Christmas Day on BBC One at 5:10 pm.
