Actor Gaspard Ulliel died after a skiing accident in Savoie

Gaspard Ulliel, 37, died on Wednesday following a serious skiing accident which occurred on Tuesday January 18 at 3:58 p.m. in the Savoyard resort of La Rosière, his agent told AFP. According to the first elements of the investigation opened by the Albertville prosecutor’s office, he was the victim of a collision with another skier at a crossroads between two blue slopes. The emergency services arrived almost instantly at 3:59 p.m. The actor had been hospitalized in Grenoble in serious condition, unconscious, after more than an hour of intervention, on the slopes, by the rescue services of the CRS Alpes. Suffering from a major head trauma, he had been operated on Wednesday, January 19. The other skier was not hospitalized.

Revealed at the age of 19 in “Les Égarés” by André Téchiné alongside Emmanuelle Béart, his interpretation of a First World War soldier in “A long engagement Sunday” by Jean-Pierre Jeunet earned him the César for best male hope in 2005. This son of two stylists notably played the famous couturier Yves Saint-Laurent in the biopic directed by Bertrand Bonello in 2014.

In 2017, he won the César for best actor for his role in “Just the end of the world” by Xavier Dolan. Also leading an international career, he will soon be starring in the Marvel series “Moon Knight” broadcast on the Disney+ platform.

The shadow of other crashes on the tracks

The announcement of Gaspard Ulliel’s accident recalls that of another celebrity victim of a skiing accident. The CHU of Grenoble had already admitted at the end of 2013 the German star of Formula 1 Michael Schumacher, hospitalized for six months after a fall against a rock which occurred while he was skiing off-piste with his son in Méribel (Savoie). He had finally left the hospital in June 2014 in a vegetative state to be installed in a medical bed in his family’s Swiss villa in Gland (canton of Vaud).

Located on the borders of the French and Italian Alps, La Rosière is a Savoyard family resort with reputedly easy slopes, but where the risk of collisions is present, as in Flaine (Haute-Savoie), where a five-year-old British girl died, the January 15, after being hit by a 40-year-old man who was skiing at excessive speed.
