Cameroon excludes Côte d’Ivoire from the race for the World Cup / 2022 World Cup / Qualifiers / Cameroon-Côte d’Ivoire (1-0) /

Cameroon 1-0 Ivory Coast

But: Toko Camp (21e) for the Indomitable Lions

Winner of the Ivory Coast at Japoma of Douala for the grand final of group D (1-0), Cameroon won the ultimate ticket for the African play-offs of this 2022 World Cup.

Enterprising Cameroonians at the start, led by attackers at the height of the event. The loss of Maxwel Cornet’s ball in front of his surface thus benefited the opportunist Martin Hongla, who came to serve Karl Toko Ekambi in withdrawal to shoot Sylvain Gbohouo (1-0, 21e). An opening of the scoring rewarding the work of António Conceição’s men that Franck Kessié and his volley could nevertheless have erased, but André Onana, with a nice reflex stop, kept watch (30e).

Far from fulfilling the criteria for a high-stake match, the second act surprisingly saw the pace drop a notch. It was therefore necessary to wait for the last twenty minutes to see the show take shape. Sébastien Haller first made the bar tremble with a nod (71e) before Nicolas Pépé, with a slalom and a counter strike (84e), then Ibrahim Sangaré, with a fleeting shot (86e), do not come to shake their training. An unfortunately late awakening for the Elephants and immense relief for the Lions.

Côte d’Ivoire will therefore miss a second consecutive World Cup. A competition that Cameroon could find, eight years after its last appearance.
