To find a mission and start your course, you will have to respect a precise organization and a few golden rules.
You are now ready to embark on a new cycle of studies. Well almost. If you are convinced by the virtues of learning, there is still one obstacle to overcome: finding a business. To achieve this, follow the steps:
1 – Prepare
The first glance to take concerns the calendar. Although this may vary – more and more courses offer staggered start times – you will generally start in September or October. Build your schedule starting from this date. On the business side, the recruitment season for apprentices runs from April to June. Of course, it may be earlier, and some companies continue to recruit until the fall. But it is during this period that the missions will be the most numerous and varied. Then comes the time to target your objectives, by learning about the professions that interest you, in connection with your training.
At the same time, you will prepare your documents, namely a CV and a basis of cover letter that you will adapt to each application. Do not hesitate to devote time to it. The recruiter must quickly understand who you are, the content of the training you are preparing and feel a real motivation to join his team.
Note: since the start of the pandemic, you have six months from the start of your training to sign your contract (compared to three months previously).
2 – Apply
List the companies that interest you. During your research, you will often come across the large groups, which are better referenced. It is worth going further, because the majority of contracts are signed in SMEs, a proportion that has increased further since the introduction of hiring aids. Remember to filter according to the place of work, a point not to be overlooked when doing work-study programs, where back and forth between business, school and home are frequent.
Where to look? Job sites are not to be neglected, as well as LinkedIn, which no longer escapes any recruiter. But maybe you should start “offline”. Get closer to your school, university or CFA. They receive announcements from businesses in the area. Also talk about your research to your loved ones.
Before sending any request, take the time to learn about the company, its sector and any news that could tell you about its “state of health” and its needs. Only then, send him your duly prepared application (CV + email or cover letter).
Our advice: create a follow-up table for your applications. Enter the target person (the HRD, or manager of the service you are interested in), the date of your sending, the date on which you will have to follow them up (preferably by telephone, otherwise by email) and the result obtained.
3 – Conclude
It’s time for the interviews. If most are done physically, videoconferencing has recently taken an important place. For some companies, it is the way to make a first selection among the candidates. Prepare for this eventuality by simulating a video interview with a loved one and test your equipment. When you make an appointment, be careful not to choose a time slot where your home will be too noisy or your internet connection saturated.
Then, virtually or physically, the rules of the interview remain the same: dress appropriately for the company you are addressing (a glance at the company’s trombinoscope will help you place the elegance), revise your knowledge of the sector and prepare a few questions that will mark your interest.
In work-study, you must know precisely what your initial missions will be, but also how they will evolve. Remember that you are committing to a longer period than an internship. It is therefore also up to you to be demanding!
