Montreal business donates $ 250,000 to fight ovarian cancer

Blachford supports Dr. Lucy Gilbert and the DOvEE project and creates the Blachford Ovarian Cancer Fellowship

MONTREAL, Dec. 21 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – After two of his employees lost their wives to ovarian cancer, John Blachford, CEO of Blachford, felt he had to do something. Ovarian cancer is a sneaky and deadly disease, the symptoms of which often do not appear until its most advanced stage. The company has pledged to donate $ 250,000 to the McGill University Health Center (MUHC) Foundation to create the Blachford Ovarian Cancer Research Fellowship to help more women survive ovarian cancer.

“Blachford is celebrating 100 years of existence this year, and we could never have reached this important milestone or achieved such success without the dedication of our employees. We have decided to donate to the DOvEE project to show our support to those around us who are affected by this terrible disease. “

–John Blachford, Owner and CEO, Blachford

The new Blachford Ovarian Cancer Fellowship will support Dr. Lucy Gilbert, Director of the Department of Gynecology Oncology at the MUHC, and the DOvEE (Early Diagnosis of Ovarian and Endometrial Cancer) project. In 2018, Dr. Gilbert developed the DOvEEgene test, a simple diagnostic test to screen for early-stage ovarian and endometrial cancers. This test works like the Pap test to find cervical cancer, and its ability to find cancer at an early stage greatly improves the chances of survival. This test is now in the final clinical trial stage, and this scholarship will provide her with much needed funds to complete the trial and bring the DOvEEgene test to as many women as possible.

“In the gynecology oncology department, I very often see diagnoses of ovarian cancer and advanced endometrial cancer. If these cancers had been detected at an earlier stage, these women would have survived. It is truly appalling. The Phase 3 clinical trials of the DOvEEgene test are the culmination of years of work, and I thank Blachford for helping us bring DOvEEgene to all women. “

Dre Lucy Gilbert, Director of the Department of Oncological Gynecology, McGill University Health Center

The survival rate for ovarian cancer has not increased for over 30 years, a surprising fact when you consider the speed at which medicine and technology have evolved. Thirty years ago, companies like Blachford used fax machines and typewriters. While tablets have replaced typewriters, no new technology has been developed to improve survival rates for ovarian and endometrial cancers. Until now.

“Too many women die of ovarian and endometrial cancer. The MUHC Foundation is proud to support Dr. Lucy Gilbert in her efforts to change this situation. We thank Blachford for his determination to ensure that these silent killers no longer take away mothers, daughters, sisters and friends. “

– Julie Quenneville, President and CEO, MUHC Foundation

Blachford, a Montreal-based company, is celebrating its centenary this year and its 365 employees around the world are proud to give back to the community that has supported its success.

DOvEE is one of the priorities of the campaign Dare to dream of the MUHC Foundation, which aims to raise $ 200 million to transform lives and advance medicine. Countryside Dare to dream. Stop the sneaky killer has raised over $ 2 million to support Dr. Gilbert’s big dream: to make the DOvEEgene test the standard of care for women and save countless lives.
