Beer after sport, a good or bad idea?

After a good workout, you may be tempted to drink a beer to relax. But is it a good or a bad idea?

What could be better than a good beer to relax after working out? Many of us want to reward ourselves after a physical effort around this drink. This is particularly the case in team sports, where teams meet at the end of matches around a beer to celebrate their victory, or to cheer up after a defeat.

Studies by the University of Barcelona as well as scientists from Finland and Sweden have shown that drinking beer can have health benefits. This drink contains vitamins, iron, calcium and other substances that help protect the immune system.

Drinking beer regularly would decrease the risk of having diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke or prostate cancer. Finally, beer would decrease the formation of amyloid plaques in the brain, frequent in patients with Alzheimer’s.

Avoid beer after sports

But is it really a good idea to drink beer after working out? The answer is no. This practice can even be harmful to health, and negate all the benefits accumulated during sport.

First of all, the alcohol contained in beer dehydrates. However, it is important to rehydrate after sports by drinking plenty of water. In addition, beer has a diuretic effect, which means that you want to urinate more, which increases dehydration.

Consuming beer after exercise is also bad for the muscles. After sports, the recovery time is very important, because this is when muscle mass will develop.

However, alcohol prevents muscles from rebuilding during this rest period, because they will have difficulty using the glucose and amino acids present in the body, which are essential in building new muscle fibers. In the long run, alcohol also disrupts the production of testosterone, a hormone that helps muscles grow.

“Beer certainly contains group B vitamins (B6 and B12), minerals such as a little magnesium and potassium as well as some amino acids. But that’s not why it turns out to be a good element for recovery. It is a fallacious speech, beer is not beneficial. The ideal is not to take it within two hours of exercising. You should preferably choose a beer below 5 degrees of alcohol, and consume a small one, 25 cl is sufficient “, said Nicolas Aubineau, sports nutritionist.

If drinking a beer from time to time after sports does not cause serious problems, it should not become a habit. Remember: alcohol should always be consumed in moderation.
